Just how did it get here? Josh Taylor reports. In the week of the last election, Bill Shorten’s job approval rating stood at just 21 per cent. But as ALP insiders have it, a week in May is a long time in politics. The ALP’s renewed political focus is on the next state election, two years away and a product of the state’s changing demographics and a shifting electoral landscape. But one certainty in Labor’s favour is that key internal matters have been dealt with, and everything points towards a grand result. Almost a year since losing office to the Liberals, Mr Shorten has secured the ALP’s pre-eminent leadership position. Memberships are up over 20 per cent this year — the biggest surge of any political party in the state’s history. Mr Shorten has taken the leadership reins, and in his first months at the helm, has set the direction for Labor on key issues. Just over a week ago, he announced a major change to the party’s policies on knife crime — his first policy of consequence — and is on track to release his first party policy within a month of the state election. Former Labor leader Martin Ferguson, who was central to the party’s decision to adopt a progressive policy on drug law reform in the 1980s, says it is a continuation of Labor’s “long-standing commitment to social justice”. “But in a fast changing world, we have to be nimble, and Bill Shorten is a man who has risen to the challenges of leadership in the modern age,” Mr Ferguson said. “He’s shown himself a leader who knows how to win campaigns — who knows how to win elections. “We’ve had a strategic direction in place for some time now, but it was just a matter of putting the policy together. “I think that Bill Shorten has set the context for this policy.” And the policy has ac619d1d87
